Once again, the young basketball players from the Digicel/NBA Jumpstart Clinics lived up to the hype and showed the coaches just how passionate they are about basketball and learning more about the game.
The coaches visited Antigua and Barbuda and Jamaica where they selected their boys and girls to move on to the academy in early October. According to the coaches, the youngsters showed the right attitude and attention to detail — qualities that are key to being successful in the game.
The next set of clinics will be in Dominica at Goodwill hardcourt in St George, and in Trinidad and Tobago at the UWI Spec in St Augustine.

After an impressive four-year career at Valparaiso University, Vashil Fernandez became the newest member of the Miami Heat on October 17.

After blocking 119 shots over the course of his senior season, Fernandez joined the likes of Anthony Davis, Hassan Whiteside and Emeka Okafor on the list of single-season block leaders to patrol the paint of the NCAA.

With a bachelors degree and two masters degrees in tow, Fernandez declared for the 2016 NBA Draft. Along the way, the Portland Trail Blazers and Toronto Raptors registered interest, but the Miami Heat soon emerged as the most serious suitor and eventually signed the Jamaican-born big man to a non-guaranteed contract.

Jamaica hold off Trinidad for second straight win 72-64

Jamaica held off a fighting Trinidad and Tobago squad for a 72-64 win in the final game of Tuesday night’s action when the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) male under-16 Championship continued at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.

Jalen Menzies and Samora Williams were once again the biggest influence in the game with the former heating up in the second half to keep the Trinidadian squad at bay.

Menzies finished with 23 points and six steals while Williams had 16 points and 13 rebounds in the game. Jabari Cunningham also contributed 11 points.

Jamaica rode the hot hands of Sheveron Williams and Jalen Menzies to pull off a 80-67 come from behind win in overtime when the Caribbean Basketball Confederation (CBC) male under-16 championship continued on Sunday at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Georgetown, Guyana.

Jamaica trailing throughout the entire game finally took the lead in the fourth quarter with four minutes remaining.

However, Menzies would hit one of two free throws with 18.6s left in game to send the thriller to overtime.

Menzies followed his clutch free throws with a three-pointer to open overtime followed by a mid-range jumper from Williams to give Jamaica the lead that they never relinquished thereafter.

FIBA Americas to visit 23 countries including Jamaica as they implement New Competition System in 2017

SAN JUAN (Americas) – The regional office of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) in the Americas has announced it is set to visit 23 countries to meet with top officials on the road to strengthening relations towards implementation of FIBA’s New Competition System coming into effect in 2017.

The visits are planned to take place in three phases. The first phase of countries to visit are Chile, Colombia, Paraguay, Panama, Dominican Republic, Bahamas and Cuba on April-June.
